Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The World is One Family!
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase meaning "The World Is One Family." It emphasizes a global perspective, promoting the well-being of all living things and fostering global cooperation.
“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, possibly one of the most famous lines emerging from
Sanskrit literature. This phrase is another demonstration of the all-inclusive attitude that our Indian
tradition has. Unity in diversity is something that we have been practicing for thousands of years, the
underlying belief says the same, we have emerged from one, the Brahman, the ultimate reality.
Originally from Maha Upanishad, the “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” phrase is part of this Shlok.
अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्।
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥
Transliteration:
ayaṃ nijaḥ paro veti gaṇanā laghucetasām।
udāracaritānāṃ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam॥
Hindi translation:
यह मेरा है, वह पराया है, ऐसे छोटें विचार के व्यक्ति करते हैं।
उच्च चरित्र वाले लोग समस्त संसार को ही परिवार मानते हैं॥
English translation:
This is mine, that is his, say the small minded,
The wise believe that the entire world is a family.
